Passenger and Freight Transportation Both Achieve Remarkable Performance in 2019

Published:2020-01-17

In 2019, CHINA RAILWAY deepened the three major measures of freight volume increase, passenger transport quality improvement plan and "Fuxing" brand strategy, to continuously increase the effective supply of railway transportation and promote the sustained growth of railway passenger and freight traffic.

In 2019, the national railways had registered a passenger ridership of 3.57 billion, up 7.7% year-on-year, of which 2.29 billion belong to EMU trains, up 14.1% year-on-year. A freight delivery of 3.44 billion tons was achieved, up 7.8% year-on-year, with container, commercial automobile and cold chain transportation up 30.4%, 13.5% and 30.6% year-on-year, respectively.

The freight volume increase actions had been implemented profoundly. The railway sector had improved the systems of transporting coal from west to east and from north to south, put the Haolebaoji–Ji'an Railway into operation ahead of schedule, and increased the coal transportation volume on Tangshan-Hohhot Railway and Watang-Rizhao Railway by 45% and 79.4% year on year. It had actively promoted the "highway to railway" transportation of ore from the ports. The freight volume of ore from major northern coastal ports increased by 15.2% year on year, with that from Caofeidian, Jingtang and Huanghua ports in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region increasing by 50%, 156% and 81% respectively. The railway sector had further canceled or reduced the freight-related charges, resulting in a cumulative reduction of RMB 35.8 billion social logistics costs since 2018. Compared with the same freight volume achieved on roads, the increased volume of railway freight saved 3.8 million tons of standard coal consumption and reduced 9.34 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The passenger transport quality improvement plan and "Fuxing" brand strategy had also been deeply implemented. The railway sector had implemented the market-based "one day, one diagram" for HSRs, continuously optimized the structure of HSR passenger transport products, explored a market-based and flexible adjustment mechanism for HSR ticket price, deepened the "toilet revolution" and the smooth operation of passenger stations, promoted e-tickets, intelligent service of stations and trains and mutual recognition of railway and metro security checks, implemented standard-reaching and quality improvement of conventional stations and trains, and improved inclusive services for key groups of passengers. It had put 17-car Fuxing EMU trains (350 km/h) and power-concentrated Fuxing EMU trains (160 km/h) into operation, and it now has 712 "Fuxing" EMUs, accounting for 19.4% of all its EMUs. Since the operation of Fuxing EMU trains, a total of 500 million passengers have travelled using the service, with an average ridership of 74.4%, which is 0.8 percent higher than the average for high speed trains.
