South American Bulk Soybean Transported by Railway Containers

Published:2020-01-10

At 9:28 on December 28, 2019, 79342 train in 47-car formation, loaded with 94 open-top containers full of 3,008 tons imported soybeans, departed from Luojiaqiao Station. This is the grain "bulk to container" rail-sea intermodal freight train (Huangshi-Chengdu) operated by China Railway Wuhan Group Co., Ltd.

By vigorously implementing the freight volume increase actions, actively expanding the rail-sea intermodal transportation corridors and promoting the transport of coal with 35-ton open-top containers, China Railway Wuhan Group Co., Ltd. has reduced the repeated loading and unloading of cargoes and the material damage and pollution caused by loading and unloading, and greatly reduced the loading and unloading duration of cargoes.

This batch of imported soybeans came from Uruguay and other countries in South America, with a total of 22,000 tons. The bulk soybeans first arrived at Huangshi New Port by shipping from Jiangyin Port, and then being loaded on the railway open-top container at Luojiaqiao Station. This trip on rail-sea intermodal freight train only takes 35 hours, which is at least 7 days shorter than the previous water transportation.

Railway open-top container is a new, convenient, fast and environmentally friendly modern containerized vehicle, which is very suitable for intermodal transport of imported soybean, corn and other grains. According to reports, since November 25, 2019, China Railway Wuhan Group Co., Ltd. had invested a total of 1,000 20-foot 35-ton railway open-top containers for recycled use of freight trains.

Since its launching, the grain "bulk to container" rail-sea intermodal freight train (Huangshi-Chengdu) has delivered 69,300 tons of bulk freight such as soybeans. Running in a "point-to-point" mode with three trips a week, the freight train has created a new corridor for rail-sea intermodal transport in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.
