Closure of China's First Rail-Road Suspension Bridge Completed

Published:2020-01-09

On the morning of December 26, at the construction site of the newly-built Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge on Lianyungang-Zhenjiang HSR, the Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge, the world's first 1,000m-scale HSR suspension bridge built by China Railway Shanghai Group Co., Ltd., was closed as the welding sparkles at the joint of the side-span steel beam and the middle-span steel beam slowly extinguished.

As a control project crossing the Yangtze River on Lianyungang-Zhenjiang HSR, Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge is the first rail-road suspension bridge built in China. The bridge has a total length of 6.409 km and a main span of 1,092m, which crosses the Yangtze River in one span. The bridge has four HSR tracks with a design speed of 250 km/h in the lower layer and two-way eight-lane expressway with a design speed of 100 km/h in the upper layer. The whole bridge is designed with two main cables with a diameter of 1.3 meters each, and the tension of a single main cable is as high as 90,000 tons.

As the construction contractor of the bridge, China Railway Shanghai Group Co., Ltd., since the project was started in October 2015, has adhered to taking scientific and technological innovation as the lead, and vigorously applied intelligent construction technology. It has made dozens of achievements in tackling of BIM technology application research, Research on Key Technologies of 1,000m-span Rail-Road Suspension Bridge and other tasks, broken through a series of technical difficulties, and ensured the construction quality.

During the erection of the bridge's steel beam, in order to minimize the impact on the transportation of the Yangtze River waterway, the construction companies utilized the plant-prefabricated steel beams in large sizes and whole sections, specially developed 4 sets of cable cranes with the largest hoisting capacity in China, optimized the organization of erection operation, and completed the hoisting operation of all the steel beams of the main bridge within 84 days.

It is known that the Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge will be completed and put into operation in the second half of 2020 along with Lianyungang-Zhenjiang HSR. The opening of Wufengshan Yangtze River Bridge is of great significance to improving the regional railway network layout in Jiangsu Province, promoting the cross-river integration and development of northern, central and southern Jiangsu and the integration process of the Yangtze River Delta.
