China's National Railways Freight up 3.6% YoY in H1 2020

  In the first half of 2020, to earnestly implement the central government's arrangements on both promoting the epidemic prevention and control, and the economic and social development, and to ensure stability in employment, financial operations, foreign trade, foreign investment, domestic investment, and expectations and ensure security in job, basic living needs, operations of market entities, food and energy security, stable industrial and supply chains, and the normal functioning of primary-level governments, CHINA RAILWAY has made all-out efforts to reduce the social logistics costs and smooth the economic links. In this period, CHINA RAILWAY registered freight of 1.69 billion tons, up 3.6% year-on-year, with a freight revenue of RMB 187.7 billion, down 4.2 % from the previous year. In particular, freight in June exceeded 10 million tons per day, marking the highest daily freight in a month since the beginning of this year.

  In H1 2020, facing the logistics supply chain severely impacted by the COVID-19 epidemic, CHINA RAILWAY has given full play to the railway's advantages in strong capacity, all-weather service and centralized control and command. It has strengthened the freight transport organization and further promoted the freight volume increase actions. Particularly, first, CHINA RAILWAY has maintained the safe and smooth railway transport, thus ensuring the timely transport of the anti-epidemic supplies and daily necessities. After the epidemic outbreaks, CHINA RAILWAY has established green channels to rapidly transport the anti-epidemic supplies and daily necessities. By giving them priorities in consignment, loading, and coupling for transportation, it ensured that all these supplies and daily necessities can be transported upon arrival. Second, CHINA RAILWAY has implemented the central government's tax and fee reduction measures, and helped enterprises to resume work and production. It has lowered the freight and miscellaneous charges to reduce the enterprises' logistics costs. It also accelerated the construction of special railway lines for enterprises to cut the logistics links and ensure the on-time delivery of cargoes. In addition, it has actively contacted enterprises with freight demands to provide them with customized transport services according to the principle of “one policy for one enterprise), thus transporting sufficient raw materials and finished products necessary for enterprises to resume work and production. Third, it has made good use of the railways with strong capacity and ensured the supply of thermal coals. It has given full play to the new freight railways such as Haolebaoji-Ji’an Railway, and arranged more 10,000-ton heavy-haul trains on Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway, Tangshan-Hohhot Railway, and Watang-Rizhao Railway, of which Datong-Qinhuangdao Railway recorded a highest daily freight traffic of 1.3842 million tons. It also allocated more transport capacity to major coal-producing areas, and supported the coal transport from the west to the east and from the north to the south, thus ensuring the supply of thermal coals. Fourth, CHINA RAILWAY has promoted the intermodal transport to help win the blue sky protection campaign. With 301 new container stations being established, China's railway system has dispatched 196 million tons of cargoes by containers in H1 2020, an increase of 47.84 million tons year-on-year, accounting for 82% of freight delivery increase in the railway system nationwide. China's railway system also transported 208 million tons of ores from major domestic coastal ports in H1 2020, up 21.7% year-on-year.

  With the accelerated recovery of China's economic and social order, the demand for freight transportation will continue growing. The railway sector will adhere to the market demand-orientation, continuously increase the effective supply of freight capacity, continuously improve the quality of freight services, to make more contributions to promoting economic and social development.
