Cargo Transport via China’s New Western Land-Sea Corridor Sees Sustained Momentum

Published:2022-12-06

In the first 11 months of this year, 687,133 TEUs of cargo were sent by the freight trains of sea-rail intermodal transport on the New Western Land-Sea Corridor, up 18.9 percent year on year, indicating the cargo transport via the corridor maintains growth momentum.

With the implementation of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the corridor has opened 78 new freight routes so far in 2022, more than five times that of last year, setting a new yearly record since its inception five years ago. Cargo categories transported on the corridor increased from a dozen types, such as ceramics and building boards, to over 640, and 21 stations of 13 cities in four province-level regions now have the access to the corridor transport, namely Henan, Hebei, Inner Mongolia, and Tibet. Currently, cargo transported on the corridor can reach 113 stations in 60 cities in 17 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, covering all 12 regions in West China and parts of Central China. A batch of major projects have been launched in the areas along the corridor, creating great economic and social benefits. (Li Qin, Luo Jie)
